      Things to Do

Observation post overlooking the hole     Sort through gravel for your own diamond!     Diamonds & Destiny Screening

There is a variety of activities visitors can take part in at the Big Hole Complex. During a tour visitors will see the screening of "Diamonds & Destiny", a film that tells the story of the discovery of diamonds in Kimberley. The climax is the viewing of the big hole from the suspended observation post, after which you will be taken on an undergroud tour to get the feel of what the underground workers had to experience deep under the earth where they earned their living. In the pulsator building you will see excellent graphic displays on the formation and recovery of diamonds with authentic objects from the past that will add to the understanding of the labels. A fabulous timeline will draw a parallel between happenings within the diamond industry and historic world events throughout many centuries. And then there is the diamond vault! Here you will be able to stare at thousands of REAL DIAMONDS! This is the largest display of real diamonds in the world.

Other activities in the complex include shopping opportunities at the variety of stores that ranges from exclusive jewellery shops to memorabilia, a rock shop, a leather product store, a coffee shop and gift shops for reminding you of your unforgettable Big Hole visit. In the Old Town, there are two old-time favourite visitors can try their hand at, and that is the Skittle Alley, and the Diamond Dig. The first is an authentic, period, 2-lane wooden skittle alley, complete with wooden skittles and wooden balls, whereas the Diamond Dig is the place to be where you can try your luck in "scratching" for "diamonds" on old-time sorting tables. There is prizes to be won at both these activities.

When visitors are done walking through the past, they can visit the Occidental Bar and Australian Arms where refreshments and meals are served.
